Sir Paul Nurse, a recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, visited the Hangzhou Institute of Medicine, Chinese Academy of Sciences (HIMCAS), on January 16, 2026. He delivered a lecture on new perspectives in cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) regulation of the cell cycle and exchanged ideas with researchers and students. The session was chaired by Xiaohong Fang, Deputy Director of HIMCAS.
Drawing on his team’s work in fission yeast, Nurse discussed how an engineered single CDK complex can drive orderly cell-cycle progression. He also explained how changes in CDK activity help control DNA replication and cell division, and presented findings on the spatial and temporal regulation of CDK activity in the nucleus and cytoplasm during mitotic entry.
The lecture was followed by an active question-and-answer session, with participants exploring the implications of these findings for cell-cycle research and related biomedical studies.
The visit provided an opportunity for direct dialogue with a leading international scientist and further academic exchange in fundamental life science research.
